An Illustrated Celebration of Wally Olins

Material is proud to present the Wall of Wally exhibition. For 2 days only, a curated selection of illustrated submissions from the Wall of Wally project will be on show in the Material space. Some of the works on display plus a limited edition book will be available to purchase.

All proceeds will go to Ella's Home Run, a charity chosen by Wally Olin's wife

Described by the Financial Times as ‘the world’s leading practitioner of branding and identity’  the multi-award-winning Wally Olins was a British practitioner of corporate identity and branding. A pioneer of branding, Wally Olins is said to have changed the face of the design industry and developed the concept of design consultancy.  The chairman of Saffron Brand Consultants and founder of Wolff Olins, he was awarded a CBE in 1999 and received the Lifetime Award from the Reputation Institute for his contribution to the industry. During his career he advised many of the world’s leading commercial companies, including 3i, Renault, Repsol, BT, Volkswagen, Tata and Lloyd’s of London and has also worked with many countries, regions and cities, among them Portugal and Poland.

The Project

Sadly Wally Olins passed away in April 2014. Designer Jamin Galea set up Wall of Wally to create an illustration directory as a tribute it the brand guru. The project invites practising illustrators to illustrate the same exact portrait of Wally in their own preferred style.

Why the same portrait?

The premise of the project is not only to act as a tribute but to also create an illustration directory. Utilising the same portrait will ensure consistency and make the directory is useful.

When studios are trying to look for the right style online it becomes tricky. If the subject of all the illustrations is the same, users start to ignore the subject and just focus on the style they’re looking for — easy!

So, what are the requirements?

1. Illustrate the portrait in your own style, 40x40cm at 300dpi – More than one portrait in different styles are also welcome.

2. Describe your illustration style in 3 keywords (such as; pencil, abstract, vector) for filtering purposes.

3. Send your finished portrait to with all your contact details; website and email (and include your agent’s details if you’ve got one).

4. Permission to use your work in this project.

5. And, feel free to Instagram work in progress shots with a #WallOfWally tag.

Jamin has been given permission by Wally’s wife and Saffron(his design consultancy) to use his portrait.  The website had a well over 29,000 hits and  illustrators are getting paid commissions via this project(great news!!). Jamin will not and is not planning to make any monetary gain from this project — none!

As there is no deadline, there is still time to submit to the project, although any new submissions will not make it into the exhibition.  All of the illustrations will only live on the Wall of Wally website unless otherwise stated.
